foxinsnow's Diaryland Diary ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- on pornography I've been reading a lot of feminist essays on pornography lately, including one by the fearsome Andrea Dworkin. I've mainly been reading essays in Debating Sexual Correctness, edited by Adele M. Stan, and one in Sisterhood is forever, edited by Robin Morgan. I really liked the essay in the former book called "Feminism, Moralism, and Pornography" by Ellen Willis, which takes not only a slightly pro-pornography stance, but an anti-censorship stance. I've only watched one porno in my whole entire life (which I wasn't turned on by), but I definitely do not believe in censorship of any kind. it seems that the anti-pornography laws that the likes of Dworkin which to pass are based on the premise that pornography is obscene, and should be censored based on some obscenity act. It seems to me that this must be the very same premise that the right wing used to censor the exhibition of Robert mapplethorpe's photographs, and is just dead wrong. Now don't get me wrong: I hate the way most pornography depicts female sexuality (in an unrealisitc, anti-woman way that only caters to male fantasies) and what I REALLY hate is the way pornography has infiltrated into mainstream media, especially into music videos and advertising. But, I'm sorry, as an artist, I just think censorship is wrong, and the best defense I can come up with for the time being is to know I am beautiful, hot and sexy the way I am and to only date guys who feel the same way, NOT guys who expect me to fulfill their porn-inspired fantasies. Speaking of Debating Sexual Correctness, Camille Paglia has a great essay in it about date rape. check your local library or bookstore! 6:37 a.m. - 2004-10-12 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
